Join Me In Taking the LISTERINE 21 Day Challenge For Better Oral Health

I recently visited a local dentist for a cleaning and consultation. During this visit, I learned that there is a right and wrong way to floss my teeth, and that brushing alone does not remove all of the things that can cause plaque and gum disease. In fact, in her own words (paraphrased, of course):

Brushing alone removes only the cottage cheese-like pieces of buildup from your mouth. If you are going to choose between brushing and flossing, flossing provides better protection because it eliminates the hardened buildup from in between teeth and makes gums healthier. Using a good mouthwash can help to remove plaque and germs that cover the places that you don't think to scrub with your toothbrush (tongue, roof of mouth) and along the gumline.

Did you know all of that? No? I didn't either. You would think that as often as we smile, talk, and kiss each day that oral health would be a priority. Unfortunately, so many people are unaware of the big difference that regular brushing, flossing, and rinsing can make to your overall health.

Oral health is something that is commonly overlooked. I'm reminded of this when I'm sitting next to someone on the bus or speaking to a fellow shopper in the grocery line. I'm reminded of this when I am just too tired to walk into the bathroom and take care of my teeth at the end of a busy evening.

Oral health means so much more than just clean, sparkly teeth and fresh, minty breath. It's a complete routine that includes brushing, flossing, and using an excellent mouth wash to get rid of all the plaque, food particles, and germs that cause cavities and gum disease.

Were you aware that brushing alone misses 75 percent of your mouth? Gross! What's the point of even picking up that toothbrush if the end result is still a yucky mouth?

I've been brushing and flossing my daughter's teeth since they grew in. It's important to teach your child healthy habits at a young age, and I am so glad to see that brands like LISTERINE and REACH are taking note of this and making products that are aimed at making oral health a fun and hassle-free habit for children.

For the next 21 days (and beyond!) my family and I will be brushing, flossing, and using LISTERINE ULTRACLEAN twice a day. Join along with Team Bradshaw as we take the steps toward better oral health! I will keep you updated with the details of our progress and the changes that we see during this challenge.

Join Me In Taking The Pledge

Oral disease has been named the most chronic childhood illness in the U.S. and impacts children of all backgrounds, especially those that are unable to afford access to professional dental care. For every person that signs up to take the 21 Day Oral Care Challenge on Facebook, the LISTERINE brand will make a donation to Oral Health America's Smiles Across America program. This program has a goal of helping up to 210,000 children in need receive oral health services in 2013.

So join the challenge and follow along with LISTERINE's efforts to spread the message about oral health on Facebook. You can also sign up for a fun reminder app that will help to keep you on track with the challenge (hint: you can adopt a "pet mouth").

What has been your biggest challenge with keeping your teeth healthy?

I received products from Johnson & Johnson Healthcare Products Division of McNEIL-PPC, Inc. and The Motherhood as part of my participation in the LISTERINE 21 Day Challenge. All thoughts and opinions expressed in this post are my own.
