How I Potty Trained My Child (By Not Doing Anything)

If you've been looking for the best potty training advice for your two-year-old, look no further than this one little word: stop! That's right - just stop. After many disappointing months of trying to reason with, bargain with, and eventually force my daughter to use her potty, I just stopped. We took a break. I did not mention the potty and did not try to convince her that a child of her age should be using one. In fact, I even went further than that - I put her potty up where she would not be able to see it.

How long of a break do you really need?

We took about a month off of potty training. In that time, both my daughter and myself had calmed down about the entire situation. We were able to reconnect as a mother-daughter team, rather than continue to quarrel over what she should be doing with her bodily fluids. Strengthening our bond made the process much easier when we got back to it.

When I pulled the potty out almost two weeks ago, Danger walked right over to it, sat down, and pee'd. A couple days later, she started pooping in it, too! The only "accidents" she has had so far happened this weekend at her close friend's birthday party (but really, who would want to take a bathroom break while amongst awesome bouncy houses and friends?!) Thankfully, I had the foresight to make sure she was wearing a diaper during the festivities.

Potty training has not been my favorite part of parenting. In fact, it may just be my very least part of being a parent, followed by weaning off the breast, changing diapers, and sleep deprivation weaning. Parenting isn't all bad, though. I also get to enjoy moments like this:
